Halloween Granny Square: Free Crochet Pattern and Tutorial

It was about this time last year that I started creating the Who’s There? Sweater. When I was thinking about the design, I wanted to make a Halloween sweater that was different from the run-of-the-mill jack-o-lantern designs. And so the granny square eyeball was born.

I’d like to share one of my favorite granny square patterns with you all! It’s perfect for beginners and seasoned crocheters alike. So grab some pumpkin spice tea, your crochet hook, and tuck in.

What you’ll need:

  • DK/Weight 3 Yarn in 4 colors [Main Color (Black), Iris Color (Green), White, and Vein Color (Red)]

  • 4.5 mm hook or any hook required to meet the gauge

  • Tape measure, scissors, darning needle for sewing ends

Gauge:

10x10 cm / 4x4 in granny square eye ball

Feel free to use thicker or thinner yarn along with different hook sizes to make the square bigger or smaller!

Abbreviations:

dc: double crochet

ch: chain

sp(s): space(s)

st(s): stitch(es)

ss: slip stitch

gcl(s): granny cluster(s)

gcl-corner: granny cluster corner

Special Stitches

Granny cluster (gcl): Three dc in the same space

Granny cluster corner (gl-corner): gcl, Ch 2, gcl in corner space

Pattern notes:

  • This pattern is written in U.S. terminology

  • Ch 2 counts as a dc unless otherwise noted

  • When working your Granny Square Eyeball, make sure you always look for the double crochet stitch directly after your Ch 3 or after making your granny cluster corners. It can be a tricky stitch to spot.

  • When you are about to fasten off Color C on your granny square eyeball, make sure to leave a long tail. We will use that yarn to add some detail in the pupil.
