The Mosty Toasty Scarf: Free Tunisian Crochet Keyhole Scarf Pattern and Tutorial

The Mosty Toasty Keyhole Scarf’s name is inspired by the Calvin and Hobbes March 6, 1988 comic strip.

During the fall and winter my neck is constantly cold, but I hate the frustration of getting lost within folds upon folds of a regular scarf. I like the idea of a cozy cowl, but they aren’t snug and let in way too much frigid air. I needed to create something that would keep my entire neck warm while also being low maintenance and actually stay put on my neck. And just like that, the Mosty Toasty Keyhole Scarf was born.

Because Tunisian crochet tends to be a bit thicker, I figured it would be the perfect method to make a warm, toasty scarf. Plus the scarf is made out of a stitch pattern that mimics x2 knit ribbing for a timeless, classic look.

Now let’s get to the pattern.

You will need:

  • 5.5 mm Tunisian crochet hook

  • around 210 meters of Weight 4/ Worsted yarn

  • darning needle to sew in ends, stitch marker

notes

  • This pattern is written in U.S. terminology

  • You can use any weight yarn as long as you chain in multiples of 3 and achieve the measurement specified in the pattern.

Pattern

MAKE TWO PANELS ALIKE

Row 1: ch 21. Pick up a loop in the 2nd ch from your hook. Pick up 1 loop in each ch st. Return pass. (21 sts)

Row 2: (1st loop on hook counts as 1st st). *TPS in next st. TKS in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * 5 more times. TPS in next st. Pull up a loop in last st (see explanation in video about picking up last sts). (21 sts)

Repeat Row 2 until you reach 15.5 cm / 6 in.

Making the keyhole space (right side)

Row 1 (keyhole space): *TPS in next st, TKS in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * 1 more time. TPS in next st. TKS in next st. TKS once more in next st (it will be your last st). Place st marker in next st. Return pass. (10 total sts).

Repeat Row 1 until you’ve reached 3.5 cm / 1.5 in. On your last row, do not fasten off, but leave a long tail and cut yarn (refer to the video). We will come back and join our yarn here later.

Making the keyhole space (left side)

Set up: Make a slip knot on your hook. Insert your hook into the marked st (as if you’re going to TPS), yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook (sc bind off made!)

Row 1: Ss into next st, (counts as 1st st). TKS into next st, * TPS into next st. TKS into next 2 sts. * Repeat from * to * 1 more time. TPS into next st. Pull up a loop in last st. Return pass (10 sts).

Row 2: TKS into next st, * TPS into next st. TKS into next 2 sts. * Repeat from * to * 1 more time. TPS into next st. Pull up a loop in last st. Return pass (10 sts)

Repeat Row 2 until you’ve reached 3.5 cm / 1.5 in. FASTEN OFF.

Joining the two split keyhole sides

Step 1: Rejoin your yarn at the right side of the keyhole (see video).

Row 1: * TPS in next st. TKS in next 2 sts. * Repeat from * to * until the end of the column. Ch 1. TKS directly into next st 2 sts. Continue the Tunisian rib st pattern until the end. Return pass.

Row 2 (adding an extra st on the forward pass): * TPS in next st. TKS in next 2 sts. * Repeat from * to * 2 more times. TFS in next Ch 1 space. Place 1 TKS into the next 2 sts. Continue the Tunisian rib st pattern until the end. Return pass. (21 sts).

Row 3: * TPS in next st. TKS in next 2 sts. * Repeat from * to * 2 more times. TPS into the TFS from previous row. Place 1 TKS into the next 2 sts. Continue the Tunisian rib st pattern until the end. Return pass. (21 sts).

Continue to work the Tunisian rib st pattern on the forward pass and do a regular return pass until you’ve reached 59 cm / 23 in from Row 3.

Your panel should measure a total of 78 cm / 30.5 in.

Final Row: sc bind off across. Fasten off.

Now all you have left to do is seam the panels together. Follow the video instructions starting at 15:35 (Seam in Loose Ends). You must seam in any loose ends before seaming your panels together— there’s no turning back once you seam the panels!
